Cambridge Engineering Summer School (Ages 16-18)
Advanced pre-university course in Engineering in Cambridge colleges
Throughout the Immerse Education Engineering summer school programme for 16-18-year-olds, you will be introduced to the engineering topics that form the foundation of engineering at university, reside at a Cambridge University College, and develop new skills as you work through a carefully constructed syllabus.
You will be equipped with introductory insights to help decide whether you should pursue studying engineering at the university level. You’ll learn first-year engineering topics and develop both theoretical and practical understanding through an exciting syllabus designed by expert tutors from leading universities.
Learn directly from expert academics from world-class universities
You will explore novel concepts and share ideas in small groups of like-minded and ambitious peers from around the world. In small class sizes averaging 7 students, you will be guided by expert tutors who have honed their expertise through teaching undergraduate students at world-class universities, including the universities of Cambridge, Oxford, and Harvard.
Our rigorous vetting process guarantees that all participants are taught by engaging and supportive educators who are, most of all, enthusiastic about sharing their expertise to ensure our summer school teaching is of the highest quality. Immerseâ„¢ is an unrivalled academic experience.

Our tutor was amazing. He knew the answer to every question that you could think of about engineering, and knew about everyone’s specialist subjects and was happy to discuss opportunities in each field with us.
My favourite aspect of the programme would be going on trips such as the tour of the London Underground, and how engineering plays such a vital role. It’s so much easier to learn and focus when there’s something that’s always keeping your attention rather than just having to focus only on lectures and classroom learning.
The thing that I found the most fun was socialising with everyone, whether it’s engineers or the medics or business people. We’ve only known them for two weeks, and this sounds so cheesy, but I feel like I’ve known them for years because we’re always together, we’re always helping each other.
Work hard, play hard.
Action-packed social programme
Outside of lessons, we are proud to offer a busy and diverse social programme to help you get the most out of your time in Cambridge. This includes activities such as punting on the River Cam, zorb football and a murder mystery night in the college.
There are also two excursions during the programme, one day trip to visit Oxford and its constituent colleges, as well as an optional day out in London, seeing the city’s most famous landmarks as well as some free time for shopping. Those who choose not to travel to London are invited to afternoon tea in Cambridge.
Activities and excursions are run by our team of friendly mentors – whose main job is to maximise your enjoyment.
Work hard, play hard.
A unique social programme.
Experience traditional 'Formal Hall'
Formal Hall is a traditional weekly meal that takes place in every college. This is an opportunity for students to dress up, dine by candlelight in the magical surroundings of a Cambridge college’s dining hall.
As an Immerse student, you will experience formal dinner three times during your stay – once per week in Cambridge, as well as in an Oxford University college on the excursion day.
Formal hall is truly a memorable occasion, so remember to bring some smart clothes!
A unique social programme.
Live and study in a
Cambridge University College
Experience life as a Cambridge University undergraduate
All participants will be allocated to a college a few weeks before arriving, based on their dates and subject choice.
If you would like to stay in the same location as a friend/sibling – please let us know and we will do our best to arrange this, where possible.
Males and females have separate accommodation in every college, and there is wi-fi available throughout.

Immerseâ„¢ Engineering Sample Modules
-
Module 1 - Electrical Engineering
You will apply the principles of electromagnetism to understand a range of electrical components such as digital circuits and sensors. You will then enrich your understanding by exploring digital circuits at the base of modern laptops and smartphones, addressing their limitations. The theory is then put into practice as you construct your own radio receiver. -
Module 2 - Mechanical Engineering
Following a review of the key principles of kinematics and the Newtonian laws of motion, you will explore rigid body dynamics for 2D and 3D objects before exploring the engineering design of earthquake-resistant buildings and pitching your own ideas based on an in-class scenario. -
Module 3 - Material Engineering
At the forefront of nanoscience and nanotechnology research, you will explore this fascinating and diverse field to evaluate existing materials and consider new substances at the forefront of current research. Participants will also explore how new materials are developed and tested. -
Module 4 - Engineering A Solution
Participants will be presented with a known problem and asked to work in pairs to create a solution based on the engineering principles that they have encountered. They will then present their idea and demonstrate a working prototype to their peers before facing questions.
