Develop a pre-university research project in English Literature

English literature as an academic discipline is about far more than just reading books. Academics in this discipline are equipped to critically analyse a range of features in the work they are studying, combine theory from a range of fields, such as history and philosophy, to supplement the depth of their analysis.

With guidance from your expert tutor, you will explore new texts through a variety of lenses and consider what establishes work as ‘good’ literature in the first place.

Reviews
Testimonials

My personal tutor was unutterably incredible. I am most grateful to him for making remarks to me about certain mistakes of mine, which I had to emphasize, and directing my gaze to where to look, and how to communicate a certain message unequivocally. I learned many new ideas from him, which I only thought about, but did not study in depth. He repeatedly gave me advice on what to do next time I write such a project or apply to a university. Certainly thanks to him I am different now and much better than when I started this programme!!!

Sample English Literature Projects

Want to explore a different theme? Our tutors can deliver tailor-made programmes to suit your needs.
  • Module 1 - What is Literary Criticism?

This topic considers what the purpose of literature is, and hence, the role of literary criticism. It does so by examining how individuals have interpreted the function of literature from the days of Aristotle through to the present day, in order to see what critical approaches to literature suggest about the purpose of literature and literary criticism.
  • Module 2 - Writing Literary History

Students are encouraged to question the formation of 'classics' and 'popular finction', and to consider how contemporary debates over the canon may be reshaping our ideas of what ‘literariness’ involves. You will be encouraged to offer their own ideas for works that should be included in certain canons.
  • Module 3 - Poetry and The Bible

You will be asked to evaluate how Milton and Eliot’s poetic invocations of biblical stories and themes enabled provocative debates regarding contentious philosophical questions (eg. regarding heroism, government, and hope).
  • Module 4 - Colonialism and Post-colonial Literature

You will be asked to consider how the politics of empire has shaped our current view of literature and literary studies and to explore ways in which post-colonial texts and ideologies can generate new interpretations of the gaps and silences in ‘canonical’ British texts.
  • Module 5 - Prosody and Metre

You will learn not only how to scan a poem, but also how to feed that understanding of analysed rhythm back into their interpretation of that poem.
