Advanced pre-university course in Law in Oxford colleges
The Immerse Education Law summer programme in Oxford for 16-18 year olds offers the perfect opportunity to explore your subject in depth ahead of committing to more advanced study. You will walk in the footsteps of a student in Oxford as you explore the range of topics available to a law student and appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of this field. Topics range from criminal law, to European law and beyond enabling you to get a feel for what it would be like to study Law at an advanced level.
Additionally, you will be invited to take advantage of LNAT workshops where you’ll learn how to study for the challenging Law National Aptitude Test.

Our workshops are geared towards unlocking participants’ potential, giving them the tools to prepare for the next steps of their education and future goals. Build upon existing study skills to support future university-level learning.
These workshops explore a diverse and enriching range of topics – past examples have ranged from ‘Productivity tips’ to ’21st Century Technology Skills’. We’re sure that you’ll learn something completely new. Unlike traditional schools, Immerse allows you to learn beyond the traditional curriculum.
This programme is designed for students with at least an upper-intermediate level of English (B2). If you are unsure if you meet this requirement, please contact advisor@immerse.education.

The class was encouraged not to jump impulsively to conclusions, but to think logically, applying all the skills and knowledge we had learned in the previous days. I truly believe that throughout the two weeks, through court visits, mock trial, explanations of the law and debates in class, the course instilled a sense of passion for law in me, which I truly didn’t expect to happen.

Action-packed social programme
Outside of lessons, we are proud to offer a busy and diverse social programme to help you get the most out of your time in Oxford. This includes activities such as punting on the River Cam, zorb football and a murder mystery night in the college.
There are also two excursions during the programme, one day trip to visit Oxford and its constituent colleges, as well as an optional day out in London, seeing the city’s most famous landmarks as well as some free time for shopping. Those who choose not to travel to London are invited to afternoon tea in Oxford.
Activities and excursions are run by our team of friendly mentors – whose main job is to maximise your enjoyment.

Experience traditional 'Formal Hall'
Formal Hall is a traditional weekly meal that takes place in every college. This is an opportunity for students to dress up, dine by candlelight in the magical surroundings of an Oxford University college’s dining hall.
As an Immerse student, you will experience formal dinner three times during your stay – once per week in Oxford, as well as in an Cambridge University college on the excursion day.
Formal hall is truly a memorable occasion, so remember to bring some smart clothes!

All participants will be allocated to a college a few weeks before arriving, based on their dates and subject choice.
If you would like to stay in the same location as a friend/sibling – please let us know and we will do our best to arrange this, where possible.
Males and females have separate accommodation in every college, and there is wi-fi available throughout.

Immerse™ Law Example Modules
-
Module 1 - The Separation of Powers
You will explore one of the most important pillars of liberal-democratic politics and a cornerstone of British constitutionalism: the separation of powers. The discussion will centre on the purpose and value of the separation of powers and its complexity, given that all branches of the state arguably make and interpret the law. -
Module 2 - Equality Before the Law
You'll explore the role of equality within the UK constitutional framework and in particular, considering whether this principle is a procedural or substantive norm, applying only to rule application or itself constitutive of legal rules. Discussion then focuses on how exactly the state should respect this principle within a modern context. -
Module 3 - Evil Laws and Evil Legal Systems
In this module you will examine the conflict between natural law theory and legal positivism in greater depth. You will consider the practical implications for adopting particular conceptions of law when courts are required to deal with evil laws and evil legal systems. The Nuremburg trials help to locate and ground these implications. -
Module 4 - Criminal Law in Practice
You will prepare for your assigned role as you explore a criminal law case in practice. Whether a witness, the accused, the victim the prosecution lawyer, defence lawyer or judge, all participants have a crucial role to play in the justice system and this provides you with an opportunity to see the law in action, as well as develop oratory skills.
