Advanced pre-university course in Economics in Cambridge colleges

Through a carefully planned curriculum developed by expert tutors from world leading universities, you will spend two weeks learning the essentials of modern economic theory, before diving into more advanced topics like trade, fiscal policy, and developmental economics. The economics summer schools will challenge them to explore new ways of thinking, understand complex concepts, and apply their new knowledge as they solve challenging problems.

You will be equipped with insights to help decide whether you should pursue studying economics at the university level. You will learn first-year business and political economics topics and develop both your theoretical and practical understanding through an exciting syllabus designed by expert tutors from the world’s leading universities – all taking place in the inspiring surroundings of a Cambridge University college.

Our Alumni says

I found the Oxbridge Research Programme classes very interactive. I was able to work one on one with my tutor, which meant that I could ask the questions which I found most important, and allowed me to go more in-depth into what I was most interested in.

My tutor had economics experience from university, which meant that I was able to experience what studying economics at university would be like. I found it was very personal to me because it allowed me to go into my own interests rather than taking a course that would cover a whole variety of economics.

Action-packed social programme

Outside of lessons, we are proud to offer a busy and diverse social programme to help you get the most out of your time in Cambridge. This includes activities such as punting on the River Cam, zorb football and a murder mystery night in the college.

There are also two excursions during the programme, one day trip to visit Oxford and its constituent colleges, as well as an optional day out in London, seeing the city’s most famous landmarks as well as some free time for shopping. Those who choose not to travel to London are invited to afternoon tea in Cambridge.

Activities and excursions are run by our team of friendly mentors – whose main job is to maximise your enjoyment.

Experience traditional 'Formal Hall'

Formal Hall is a traditional weekly meal that takes place in every college. This is an opportunity for students to dress up, dine by candlelight in the magical surroundings of a Cambridge college’s dining hall.

As an Immerse student, you will experience formal dinner three times during your stay – once per week in Cambridge, as well as in an Oxford University college on the excursion day.

Formal hall is truly a memorable occasion, so remember to bring some smart clothes!

Immerseâ„¢ Economics Sample Modules

To see how the programme is structured, download the Academic Insights timetable here.
  • Module 1 - Introduction To Econometrics

    Introduction To Econometrics
You are taught how multiple regressions allows researchers to control variables that would otherwise confound one’s results, and the most commonly used tools to test hypotheses and estimate causal effects. The session also gives you a chance to learn from methods such as natural experiments, regression discontinuities, and instrumental variables.
  • Module 2 - Development Economics

    Development Economics
You will learn why some countries are vastly richer than others in the context of economic development. Explore answers to this question by focusing on the role of poverty traps, education and nutrition. You'll understand how economic interventions can help to alleviate poverty, with an emphasis on microfinance and cash transfers.
  • Module 3 - Auction Theory

    Auction Theory
Auctions can be viewed as a game in which players choose how much to bid without knowing the bids of their opponents. As a result, you'll be asked to extensively analyse auctions using game theory. In this tutorial, you will use these tools to study a variety of auction formats: first and second-price auctions and all-pay auctions. Derive the game-theoretic predictions of how people should bid and test this by conduction auctions in the classroom.
  • Module 4 - Project Presentation

    Project Presentation
You'll finish with an exciting one day mini-conference! By working independently over the two-week period, you will spend the last day discussing your relevant findings on your assigned Capstone Project, as well as presenting this to your peers and tutor. The course finishes with a workshop and review session to discuss applying for economics and business and management degrees and subsequent career options.
